Strong competition and continuous recruitment of Filipino designers abroad are threatening the handicraft industry in the Philippines. The strongest competitor is Thailand in terms of design, and China for volume orders and cheaper products.

Filipino crafstmen can create better here because they do not have the pressure of mass production over here, unlike if they go to China. It’s labor camp over there.

Some designers and craftsmen do limited editions, and those are upscale. But if China lures these people with oodles of cash and, most importantly, a steady workflow (because China is known for volume exports at lower prices due to mass production/reproduction), then they can decide at the blink of an eyelash. Very unfortunate, really.

Yeah. That is a logical choice. The good side of this is the fact that there are more talent waiting in the wings.

Filipinos are quite creative and have an eye for design and patience for craftsmanship.
