It was a necessity for the family to have such females. With dead fathers and no eldest brother, these females had to take on the responsibility of becoming the head of the family and run the household.
The social phenomenon of ’sworn virgin’ looks a little odd to us now, because it might seem unthinkable in this day and age.
But think deeper. Don’t such females also exist today? There are females now who forego marriage and having their own families because they have to take care of their parents and siblings. It’s just that we don’t have this phenomenon of ’sworn virgin.’
In fact, one need NOT to stay a virgin while taking care of her family and staying unmarried! :)
