Like the Philippine Eagle, the Tamaraw is another animal that can best symbolize mass extinction of species in the Philippines. Once found in the thousands in the early 1900s, it is estimated that fewer than 300 survive today.

It is sad that this species is also vanishing. The planet has shifted in such a way that will not support all creatures. Man’s greed is killing the rest of the food chain.

Some doubt should also be lent to environmental reporting, though. Some say there are only more than 200 Tamaraw left in the wild. Others say there are at least 1,000. A good survey is needed.

But still, 1,000 is a very paltry figure. Hence, this species is indeed vanishing. Sad.

Such is the sad state of animal habitats. The trend doesn’t seem to reverse. Even biodiversity in Indonesia is likewise dwindling.
