Excellent article about a complex subject. It’s full of pertinent questions and fact, but I just wanted to push the following statement further.

Yes, they have, but in my humble opinion it’s a little more subtle than that. Sexual abuse of women in your own army is not the same as for civilian women in conquered countries.

The rape of women in conquered territory is often due to;

a) ”We are humiliating your defeated soldiers and husbands”

and

b)”We are avenging our fallen brothers”.

Not at all pretty, but nothing to do with misogynous feelings (even if the perpetrators may well be misogynous people).

War does weird things to people. If only it was ”just” misogyny....

This is a sad and disgusting crime that seems to happen within most militaries partaking in hostile takeover of one’s territory.. They have GOT to be punshed to the furthest extent of the law.
