The Foundation that manages the Global Fund (that has, to date, US$ 11.3 billion and to be spent in 136 countries) states the following:

(1) Sub-Saharan Africa is the world’s worst-affected region. Seventy percent of all people infected with HIV live in sub-Saharan Africa, even though it is home to only 11% of the world’s overall population.

(2) Around 40 million people worldwide are infected with HIV, 95% of whom live in developing countries. In 2004, approximately five million people were newly infected with the virus.

(3) HIV/AIDS has killed more than 20 million people worldwide. 3.1 million people died of AIDS-related causes in 2004.

(4) AIDS is the leading cause of death in Africa and the fourth-leading cause of death worldwide.

So, Celso, will it really matter why medicines aren’t distributed?

If you look at the mind-boggling figures stated in Global Fund’s factsheet, whose country reports look great?

Hi, Mad.
The reason why Africa is the biggest on the AIDS map is because it is also the location of the highest number of infected people and casualties from the top killer diseases of the world such as malaria, diarrhea, measles, etc.

Also, as is stated in the article above, AIDS in Africa is diagnosed by four clinical symptoms: diarrhea, fever, persistent cough, and weight loss of more than 10% over two months. AIDS in Africa need not be diagnosed through the HIV Antibody Test.
The top killer diseases in the world happen to have symptoms that are the benchmarks and indications for AIDS in Africa.

Grace,

I have been looking at Kenya data on HIV/AIDS and I’m absolutely stunned as the scam unravels right before me.

In the 90s, Kenya’s prevalence rate was given (by USAID, WHO and the National AIDS Control Council) as about 14%. The preferred campaign slogan then was that ”700 Kenyans die daily” of HIV/AIDS.

But after a different sampling methodology was used for a demographic and health survey in 2003, the figure was found to be actually lower at 6.7%. Rather than say that this was the ”corrected” figure, the President himself went on record to state that the ”government campaign had succeeded in lowering the prevalence rate”!

Something along the lines of...”We have done a good job. Give us money to achieve more”

And Lo and Behold, the US ambassador announced a 10 fold increase in funding($370million) soon after, in ”recognition of the successful Govt. programs”.

Unbelievable!

Yes, this thing about AIDS estimate seems to be the most ridiculous aspect of the phenomenon called AIDS.

And all this time, the world has been believing these mind-boggling figures.

Thanks for sharing to us that particular Kenya experience!

Well , In Burma trade sanction stopped western companies from doing business there. Some NGOs come in with western and world aid money for AIDS prevention. UN and NGOs are mainly interested in HIV since it is sexy and attractive to have donor’s cash. HIV started in border area trading and inly prevalent there mainly at first where as the whole country’s main problem is malaria, TB , hepatitis and malnutrition. But they have not much fund for these real ones. With market economy there are some more cases of HIV in the city as well later and they make so much out of it. Their offices spend a lot on research papers and books to show to the donors. The American impression of the third world is that we lack in culture in controlling the nature. During cylcone Nargis disaster, an American NGO sent condoms to Burma saying that they need it during this recovery time. How can one think about such thing in such a tragic situation. The doctors in Myanmar are working for NGOs and journalists are writing HIV stories. They all are paid in foreign currency so they are saying what they are instructed and not saying what the real need is . More problem there in other areas than in HIV.

I hope I have said enough. I am not saying this with prejudice but I want to say the truth. I am glad that they are helping us but sometimes I do not find things right and I do not think funds are used rightfully . But this may be their rice bowl and selling point . How can you say! Yes, Third World and underdeveloped countries do look good on NGOs’ Country Reports. And Country Reports get continuous funding.
Paper clips are small time. Backhand commissions and kickbacks occur in the printing of tons of reports and reading materials!
Most of the money for AIDS is spent on this thing called AIDS education because the AIDS establishment says that the disease has no cure, will need lots of prevention so as not to spread, and will therefore necessitate a universe of educational materials.
So, instead of the huge AIDS funds going to the alleviation of those 29 familiar diseases grouped under the surveillance category called AIDS, the money goes to educating the publics on how to prevent the spread of HIV, a non-existent entity!
