Great article, Grace. Yes, a lot has to do with territorialism, but I still think much, if not most, has to do with religion, esp. with Islamic fundamentalism. It’s about forcing everyone to adhere to their fundamentalist rules and regulations, or suffer the often-violent consequences, including killing those who refuse to convert, or who have converted to another religion.

This also accounts for the bloody sectarian violence in places like Iraq. If it was all about ’foreign occupation’, and territorry, why wouldn’t all their attacks be against the ’foreign military invaders’, rather than other innocent Muslim men, women and children.

Thanks!

I agree that religion plays a part. After all, even the Sunni and the Shia have been at odds with each other.

But come to think of it, the disputes brought about by factionalism have also been largely based on the notion of property or of cohesion among members of the ’faction.’

From what I have seen with Islamist fundamentalism, the religion part is closely connected to preserving the religious dictum and dogma for purposes of preserving the human organization.

Ultimately, it is for guarding, safekeeping, and preserving the identity and character of the particular organization. The basic ideas of property and identity are tied to the principle of territory which, in turn, is associated with self-determination and self-rule.

This is to let the readers of this article know that the tags to this story were changed without my knowledge.

The original tags I put were:

self-determination, self-rule, occupation of land, terrorism, rebels, neo-colonialism, vengeance, justice

Now, the tags are:

hatred, hate, violence

Whoever did it (and obviously had the capacity to edit into articles), read into this piece such destructive explanations as hatred, hate, and violence.

I wish the person told me that he/she was changing the tags into these new words.

Then, I would have explained the crux of this article, being an attempt to look at these issues beyond the banal categories of hatred, hate, and violence.

If I wanted to write about these concepts, the article would definitely have taken a different tack.

If that is the case then I agree with you Grace. I don’t see any reason to interpret your article to mean hate, hatred, violence. On the contrary.

My articles are sometimes re-tagged, and most re-tagging is ok, and orients my stuff better. I have, on the other hand, felt it was not well done and re-tagged my originals. This is, however, rare.

Why don’t you edit it and change the tags back again?

Having said that, and it’s very disturbing, is that I, and certain others, have had our edit buttons removed. I can’t even edit my own stuff and have had to stop contributing since yesterday because of that. Three emails to the site have remained unanswered.

Do you have your edit button?

Strange things are going on......
